I really love fly fishing…period.
I had two opportunities to get on the water in the past week and they were two vastly different experiences.
The first was on a favorite mountain stream and it was magical.
The top was a feisty little wild rainbow that came to the net within the first 5 minutes. I always am thankful when I ‘break the skunk’ right away. It seems to take some pressure off and usually makes for a great day.
That nice sized native brookie was soon after and made the day…I think they are the prettiest trout out there (char if you are picky).
I was fishing my Helios 8’6” 4wt and I love that rod. Accurate and light it is a dream to fish with.
Had so much fun that I finished up early and headed home to do some work.
A few days later I went out on a local tailwater and had a good day fishing and bad day catching. Only one to the net and/or hooked.
About a 10 inch wild brown and it was the only ‘taker’ for the session. I was fishing with my TB40 tenkara rod and just wasn’t in the zone at all and it seemed the fish weren’t as well.
I was, however, using a new pack combo and that worked out really nicely.
It was the Zimmerbuilt Pocket Water pack with Split Shot Straps.
The straps are an option and I added the padded waist belt and waist pockets.
The pack is insanely light and fits really well. I loaded it up with gear and a water bladder to see how it carries. The split shot straps hold up to a large size fly box (Fulling Mill Tactical Max) easily and are super convenient.
My only wish for the pack is that it had a slot in the top of the pack to feed the water bladder hose out and that it was covered like most backpacks do. Currently, it is just fed out of the size of the pack via the zipper and in a downpour the contents of the pack would get soaked.
Tough session and a comfortable pack.
Mountain streams are PRIME right now. Wish I could go every day...
