My most recent trip was significant for reason other than catching a lot of fish. I wasn’t skunked, but the results were meager (1 wild brown and 1 rainbow stocker).
I didn’t have a lot of time and the temperatures were quite chilly so the water selected was a tailwater local to me. Didn’t take very long and I caught a pretty decent wild brown (jumper) and was pretty excited about the remaining time in my session.
the ‘bow’
the ‘brownie’
and the reason/excuse about why I didn’t catch anymore trout:
That high holing heron wasn’t alone…
There were two of them that (a) flew right above me going upstream and then (b) proceeded to high hole me the whole rest of the morning.
I immediately thought of Matt Grobe from the Troutbitten podcast talking about getting ‘high holed at the honey hole’. Those rascal birds picked the best spots ahead of me and basically ruined it for me.
However, I laughed and thought it incredibly ironic that after being predominantly high holed by other human anglers (with great frustration), that I was completely shut down by my natural competitors. I guess thousands of years of evolution is to their advantage. Every time I got close enough to try and scare them away…they just flew farther upstream.
Anyways, it was great to be on the water and I was super thankful for the two trout I brought to the net. Next week promises to have possibilities for three days of fly fishing and two of them will be with good friends.
How is your early spring coming along?
All the best and tight lines,
Mike
Great attitude. You're on their meal ticket ;-)
It’s like seeing an otter on the river. I always feel privileged and annoyed at the same time.
